Hazardous Materials

Asbestos, Lead (paint & dust), Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCB’s), Mercury, and others

Are you responsible for:

  • Building or work place management?
  • Repairs and maintenance?
  • Refurbishment and renovations?
  • Health and Safety?

If the answer to any of the above is yes, you need to know whether hazardous materials are present within your areas of responsibility before any activities take place.

Current legislation, as stated in the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation, and Code, require a duty to manage hazardous materials, such as, lead, PCB, mercury, and more specifically asbestos, in buildings. The duty requires those in control of buildings to:

  • Identify and record the location and condition of any asbestos and other hazardous materials found;
  • Introduce a plan to manage that asbestos and other hazardous materials; and
  • Ensure that the information about the location is passed to those who need it.

Hazardous Material Assessments

Dent Consulting Services Ltd. offers a variety of Hazardous Material Assessments to suit your needs;

  • Presumptive Survey
    • Visual assessment to identify location and condition of suspect materials. Used for annual assessments of previously identified hazardous materials.
  • Sampling Survey
    • Standard sampling, identification and assessment survey (non-destructive). Used to create management programs and identify materials that may be disturbed during renovations and/or day to day work.
  • Pre-demolition Survey
    • Standard sampling, identification and assessment survey (destructive). Used to define materials that need to be removed from a building before renovation takes place or a demolition permit can be acquired from the municipality.

Dent Consulting Services Ltd. uses the Alberta Human Resources and Employment – Asbestos Exposure Hazard Assessment protocol, with minor modifications to the required data, using the following factors:

Condition Friability Accessibility Air Plenum
Water Damage Activity Type of Asbestos Percentage of Asbestos

The location, condition and extent of all hazardous materials and suspected hazardous materials identified during the survey are recorded in the form of an asbestos register. This register can be something as simple as a hard copy as part of a report or as complex as an electronic format designed specifically for your site.

Inspection of properties outside normal working hours can be arranged where clients commercial operations dictate.

Hazardous Materials Management Plans

Hazardous Materials Management Programs need to be established to maintain a safe and healthy work environment for employees, maintenance / custodial staff, contractors and visitors by ensuring that the hazardous materials will be managed, abated, and disposed in full compliance with all applicable Federal, Provincial, and local regulations to reduce and eliminate exposure. The objectives of any good program include; identification of hazardous materials, hazard communication and assessment, training and proper project documentation associated with hazardous material abatement projects in your facilities.

The most common Hazardous Material Management Program is an Asbestos Management Program which includes work practices to maintain asbestos-containing material in good condition, to ensure proper cleanup of asbestos fibers previously released, prevent further release of asbestos fibers, and monitor the condition of asbestos-containing material. Intact and undisturbed asbestos materials do not pose a health risk and improper removal can create a dangerous situation
